We are providing you with a detailed incident report on the recent Motoko Token Airdrop. Our promise of transparency includes sharing both our successes and challenges, as well as the steps taken to address them.

First Event: Wrong Tokens Claim

  • Issue: A snapshot data error led to incorrect token claims.
  • Response: Upon identification, we immediately paused the claim process to prevent further erroneous claims.
  • Action: The snapshot was restored from timestamp 1706626835502692713 (nanoseconds).

Second Event: High Traffic Spike and Atomicity Issues

  • Issue: A high traffic spike resulted in atomicity issues during claim transactions.
  • Response: Reacting swiftly within 15 minutes, we paused the entire process, including transactions, to prevent catastrophic errors.
  • Action: Partially reversed transactions to rectify the atomicity issues.

Overall Impact —

Approximately 43.99991 tokens were lost due to the anomalies.

Resolution: To compensate for the losses, we promptly repurchased tokens from the market and added them to the mint wallet; attaching the transaction details below.

Moving Forward

While these incidents were unfortunate, we want to assure the community that we take these challenges seriously. We are implementing additional measures to enhance the robustness of our systems and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
